Dos Dubs and Donuts

31/05/2024

Two in a row counts as a win streak, right? The Vikings went into this past weekend looking for their second win of the season and they found exactly that. The Vikings faced the Limhamn Griffins and came away with the win.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Vikings looked very good. On the day the offense churned out 494 yards of offense and 5 scores. The offensive production was split almost evenly between the pass and run. To top things off, the Vikings had possession of the ball for just over 28 minutes, and effectively kept the ball away from the opposing team.

The Vikings defense feasted against the Griffins. After struggling against the pass for much of the season, the Vikings D turned up huge in this game, only allowing a total of 141 yards. The Vikings secondary gave up just 8 completions all game, and took the ball away 3 times via interceptions. But in football, yards gained don’t matter if you give up points on the scoreboard. The Vikings seemed eerily aware of this and shut the Griffins down completely in the scoring department, earning the proverbial donut. Jameis Winston once wanted to “eat dubs” and the Vikings defense seemingly took this to heart, as rumor has it they ate ate the W and shared actual donuts on the bus ride home.

Standout performances

This week the entire Vikings defense is highlighted. #1 Will Sewell turned in a great individual performance (if you haven’t noticed Sewell is, like, really good at football), which without a doubt contributed to slowing down the Griffins and earning the Vikings first ever shutout in the Superseries. But several other players made their mark in this game. #20 Vetle Skagmo had a pick-6, returning an INT 51 yards for a TD. #11 Håvard Gundesø also snagged an INT on a deep ball. This was a collectively great effort by the Vikings defense.

Another week, another two-touchdown game for #3 Matthew Snawder. Snawder caught 4 footballs for 97 yards and 2 touchdowns with a long of 53 yards. So far this season, Snawder has 19 catches and 7 touchdowns. I have done the math, and that means he is likely to score every third time he catches a football. Again, another great performance by the explosive scoring machine.

#8 Rune Nilsen put on a show, rushing for 152 yards on 17 carries, with 2 touchdowns. To save whoever is reading the trouble of pulling out a calculator, 152 yards on 17 carries averages out to 8.9 yards per carry. To put that into perspective, averaging 4 yards per carry as a running back is good, averaging 5 yards is great, and 8.9 yards per carry is wild. Well done sir, well done.
